When people hear “STEM,” most imagine a world of endless possibilities pioneering research, high-tech labs, skyscrapers, and life-changing inventions. But for many African women (myself included), stepping into this world is rarely straightforward. Even with two decades of experience in mechanical engineering and the energy sector, with leadership roles in ASME and SWE, I still found myself blindsided by just how much I didn’t know, especially when I first encountered the fast-paced world of tech.
Like so many, I spent years laser-focused on my niche, thinking I understood the STEM landscape. It wasn’t until 2021, when I dipped my toes into Web3, that I realized how much of the “T” in STEM ‘technology” I’d missed out on. Suddenly, I was exposed to a world where ideas could become reality almost overnight, where innovation moved at the speed of thought, and where the rules were still being written. It was thrilling, and honestly, a little intimidating.
Fast forward to 2024: I became a full-time startup founder, and my eyes were opened even wider. Attending conferences across the spectrum, I discovered communities and opportunities I’d never imagined, from rooms filled with Black excellence and women leading in tech, to vibrant summits that celebrated not just technical achievement, but wellness, collaboration, and personal growth.
If you’re an African woman in STEM, you deserve to experience these transformative spaces. As such, here are five must-attend conferences that can change your STEM journey, expand your vision, and connect you with a global sisterhood of innovators, leaders, and dreamers.
5 Must Attend Conferences
1. Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC)

If you asked me which single event changed the trajectory of my career, I’d say the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) without hesitation. I was first invited by two incredible people, Bo Young Lee and Troy Williams, who probably had more faith in my potential than I did in myself at the time.
Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale and energy of GHC. When I walked into the venue in Philadelphia, I was immediately surrounded by thousands of women – talented, driven, and diverse. The sense of belonging was almost overwhelming. Here was a place where women in tech weren’t the exception, but the rule. While I had spent years in rooms where I was “the only,” GHC was the opposite: a sea of female engineers, data scientists, founders, and leaders from every background.
Last year’s GHC was considered “small” by their standards, but for me, it was gigantic. I met future collaborators, mentors, and friends who have since shaped my professional and personal life. And I realized just how much I’d been missing by not seeking out these spaces sooner.
Why GHC is a Must for African Women in STEM:
- Representation: You’ll see women of color, including African women, on stage, leading sessions, and making history.
- Opportunity: Hundreds of companies come to recruit, and the networking is unmatched.
- Community: There’s no place quite like it for building relationships that last beyond the conference.
Theme for 2025: Unbound, a call to break barriers, defy limits, and reimagine what’s possible for women in tech.
Dates: November 4-7, 2025
Location: Chicago, IL

2. BlackStars Experience

I first heard about the BlackStars Experience Summit almost by accident—one of those serendipitous moments that change everything. The 2024 summit in New York City was my introduction, and I was blown away. Picture a gathering where Black excellence isn’t just present; it’s celebrated, honored, and multiplied.
Unlike the massive scale of GHC, BlackStars felt intimate. I found myself in deep, meaningful conversations with trailblazers across tech, finance, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. The panels were eye-opening, and the honorees, like Dr. Abdon Atangana, the world’s highest-ranking mathematician, reminded me just how much talent exists in our community.
One of my favorite moments was meeting Dethra Giles, a woman I have long admired for her leadership and vision. The energy, the networking, and the pure joy of being among so many high-achieving Black professionals was unlike anything I’d experienced before.
Why BlackStars Experience Belongs on Your List:
- Connection: Meet Black STEM professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders who “get it.”
- Recognition: The BlackStars Awards Gala honors those making an impact across industries.
- Mentorship: The conversations and relationships you build here can open doors you never knew existed.
Dates: November 13-14, 2025

3. AfroTech Conference

AfroTech was a revelation for me. I only found out about it a weekend before the 2024 conference, thanks to my friend Dr. Ijeoma Nwaogu, who sent me videos of her “street” interviews. Watching those clips, I could feel the energy radiating through the screen, an explosion of Black excellence, creativity, and innovation.
AfroTech is not just a conference; it’s a movement. It brings together Black professionals and entrepreneurs in technology, startups, venture capital, and more. The vibe is electric, the sessions are cutting-edge, and the opportunities for networking are limitless.
Why AfroTech is Unmissable:
- Scale: One of the largest Black tech conferences in the world, attracting thousands of attendees.
- Diversity: You’ll hear from founders, engineers, investors, and creators at the top of their fields.
- Career Growth: Recruiters are actively seeking talent, and the job fair is legendary.

4. Soulstice Summit

Soulstice Summit is unlike any other event I’ve attended. It combines everything I wish more conferences focused on: professional growth, wellness, authentic networking, and purpose-driven conversations. There’s something magical about a space that values not just what you do, but who you are as a whole person.
Shout out to Khayla McClinton for inviting me to speak at this year’s summit, it’s an honor I don’t take lightly. Soulstice attracts STEM professionals who want to lead with both ambition and heart. Expect sessions on mental health, leadership, skills development, and building a powerful support network. You’ll leave feeling both inspired and recharged.
Why Soulstice Summit Matters:
- Holistic Growth: Sessions on well-being, resilience, and purposeful leadership.
- Community: Build connections that go beyond business cards—real relationships that sustain you.
- Empowerment: See yourself reflected in speakers and attendees at every stage of the STEM journey.

5. Tech Intersections: Women of Color in Computing

Tech Intersections is a breath of fresh air. Their mission resonates deeply with me: tech conferences often overlook underrepresented women, especially on technical topics, and the cost can be a barrier for many. Tech Intersections flips the script, centering Black and Brown women—including trans and gender-expansive folks—in computing.
Held in Oakland, California, this event is intentionally intimate and affordable. It’s a place where you can learn, lead, and network without feeling like you have to fight for a seat at the table. The Allies Workshop is a powerful addition, educating supporters about the impact of emerging technologies on low-income and minority communities.
Why Tech Intersections Should Be on Your Radar:
- Mission-Driven: Focused on justice, inclusion, and building community in tech.
- Access: Lower cost and a welcoming environment make it accessible to more people.
- Leadership: Panels, workshops, and keynotes led by women of color who are reshaping tech.
Dates: January 24, 2026

Why Conferences Matter for African Women in STEM
Conferences are not just about what you learn, they’re about who you meet, who inspires you, and who you become in the process. For African women in STEM, these gatherings can be life-changing for several reasons:
1. Visibility and Representation
Seeing others who look like you and share your lived experiences is powerful. It affirms that you belong and can lead in any field.
2. Access to Opportunities
Many job offers, collaborations, and mentorships begin with a conversation at a conference. You never know where that handshake or LinkedIn connection might lead.
3. Learning and Upskilling
Workshops, panels, and breakout sessions deliver cutting-edge knowledge you can’t always get in school or on the job.
4. Community and Belonging
Imposter syndrome fades when you’re surrounded by others who understand your journey. Conferences are spaces to recharge, celebrate, and strategize together.
5. Inspiration and Purpose
When you hear from trailblazers who have overcome adversity, it fires up your own ambition. You leave with new dreams and the courage to pursue them.
How to Make the Most of Your Conference Experience
It’s not just about showing up—it’s about showing up prepared and open to what’s possible. Here are some hard-won tips from my own journey:
1. Set Clear Goals
Decide what you want to achieve. Are you looking for a job? Hoping to find a mentor? Want to learn about a new field or just expand your network?
2. Do Your Homework
Familiarize yourself with the agenda, speakers, and sessions. Identify the people you want to connect with.
3. Prepare Your Story
Have a short, compelling introduction ready—your background, your passions, and what you’re looking for next.
4. Be Proactive
Don’t wait for others to approach you. Introduce yourself. Ask questions. Be curious.
5. Follow Up
After the event, reach out to new contacts. Thank speakers who inspired you. Continue the conversations.
6. Give Back
Share what you learned with your community. Mentor others who might not be able to attend.
