Even with two decades of experience in mechanical engineering and the energy sector, with leadership roles in ASME and SWE, I still found myself blindsided by just how much I didn’t know, especially when I first encountered the fast-paced world of tech.
Like so many, I spent years laser-focused on my niche, thinking I understood the STEM landscape. It wasn’t until 2021, when I dipped my toes into Web3, that I realized how much of the “T” in STEM ‘technology” I’d missed out on. Suddenly, I was exposed to a world where ideas could become reality almost overnight, where innovation moved at the speed of thought, and where the rules were still being written. It was thrilling, and honestly, a little intimidating.
Fast forward to 2024: I became a full-time startup founder, and my eyes were opened even wider. Attending conferences across the spectrum, I discovered communities and opportunities I’d never imagined, from rooms filled with Black excellence and women leading in tech, to vibrant summits that celebrated not just technical achievement, but wellness, collaboration, and personal growth.

1. Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC)
If you asked me which single event changed the trajectory of my career, I’d say the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) without hesitation. I was first invited by two incredible people, Bo Young Lee and Troy Williams, who probably had more faith in my potential than I did in myself at the time.
Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale and energy of GHC. When I walked into the venue in Philadelphia, I was immediately surrounded by thousands of women – talented, driven, and diverse. The sense of belonging was almost overwhelming. Here was a place where women in tech weren’t the exception, but the rule. While I had spent years in rooms where I was “the only,” GHC was the opposite: a sea of female engineers, data scientists, founders, and leaders from every background.
Last year’s GHC was considered “small” by their standards, but for me, it was gigantic. I met future collaborators, mentors, and friends who have since shaped my professional and personal life. And I realized just how much I’d been missing by not seeking out these spaces sooner.

I first heard about the BlackStars Experience Summit almost by accident—one of those serendipitous moments that change everything. Unlike the massive scale of GHC, BlackStars felt intimate. I found myself in deep, meaningful conversations with trailblazers across tech, finance, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. The panels were eye-opening, and the honorees, like Dr. Abdon Atangana, the world’s highest-ranking mathematician, reminded me just how much talent exists in our community.
One of my favorite moments was meeting Dethra Giles, a woman I have long admired for her leadership and vision. The energy, the networking, and the pure joy of being among so many high-achieving Black professionals was unlike anything I’d experienced before.
